Pi Sign
The privileged Plaza del Pi neighbourhood is as popular as it is convenient, with its Medieval and Renaissance palaces alongside colourful shops, art galleries, cafes and restaurants. Small as this neighbourhood is, it manages to include Barcelona’s oldest shopping gallery and a large number of designer and antique shops.

Because of its superb situation, this apartment is ideal for business and professional visitors as well as tourists and shoppers seeking maximum convenience and comfort in furnishings and location.

THE RENTAL APARTMENT

The apartment has beamed ceilings in the three main rooms as well as two balconies on the street with typical French doors and modern double-glazed windows. Heating and air-conditioning, hair-dryer, washing machine, iron and ironing board are provided.
The main living space is made up of a living room with balcony, dining room, and double bedroom, also with balcony. The character of 18th century elegance is retained by the visible ceiling beams painted white and a stout natural wooden beam and fanlight above the high double doors connecting the living and dining rooms.

However, Casa Maria has been designed entirely for the convenience of its guests. Such convenience has its price, and this is seen in the choice of a stainless steel dishwasher and microwave oven-grill, complemented by stainless steel kitchen accessories. The same may be said of the walk-in shower in the bathroom. Guests who prepare an occasional snack or enjoy elaborate meals equally appreciate the convenience of a kitchen and bathroom that are easy to keep clean and tidy.

THE RENTAL ACCOMMODATION

The spacious double bedroom features a comfortable latex queen-size bed and a balcony with French windows overlooking the street.

Bedroom

The living room has an Italian convertible sofa bed with latex futon mattress to provide additional sleeping space. The entertainment centre includes a CD player, DVD and satellite television.

The dining-room seats 4 and is decorated with a large format original drawing. Above the double doors to the living room, a large natural timber beam has been conserved for its original 18th century character, while a glass panel above this lets through additional outside light from the glass doors to the living room balcony.

The well-equipped kitchen has a stainless steel microwave oven-grill and dishwasher. Also furnished are an easy to clean vitro-ceramic hob, refrigerator, and a complete range of kitchen appliances and utensils.

Kithchen

The bathroom has a walk-in shower only, and like the rest of the apartment, is designed for greatest possible convenience and cleanliness.

BACRECLONA TOURIST INFORMATION

Plaza del Pi is a popular square in the Gothic Quarter of central Barcelona, taking its name from a legendary pine tree in the plaza in front of the 14th century Church of Santa Maria del Pi. The square also gives its name to a small, privileged

neighbourhood that was once a favourite of the leisure classes. The palaces on the Plaza and on Calles Pi and Petritxol were built by the nobility and wealthy merchants in Medieval times and during the Renaissance. Such homes were once a popular fashion, and these small palaces are still much admired today although occupied in general by ordinary citizens.

Art galleries

In the 19th century, a coach-house on the plaza offered comfort and refreshment to weary travelers. Today the popular Bar del Pi at the same site provides mainly refreshment, although some artists, writers and street musicians still regard it as a place of refuge and occasional daytime home away from home. Its importance in the world of art is shown by the many original artworks on the walls dedicated to the owner.

It is no accident that one of Barcelona’s most important 19th century art galleries, Sala Parès, is still open just around the corner on the quaint, medieval Calle Petritxol, along with several other galleries and print shops of more recent origin. And every weekend Plaza del Pi plays host to a colourful outdoor artists’ market.

Galerias Malda

Shopping

The area is most convenient for shopping, whether your interest is in designer and ready-to-wear shops like Adolfo Dominguez, Zara and Mango, or in the many antique shops, print shops, art galleries and curiosity shops. Calle Portaferrissa is a favourite shopping street named for an iron gate in the Medieval city walls. Between this street and Plaza del Pi are over a hundred small shops in Galerías Maldà, Barcelona’s oldest shopping gallery. While built in the 1940’s, incorporating part of a 17th century palace, the gallery reflects a turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau styling typical of old Barcelona. Here you will find shops dedicated to gloves, glassware, thimbles, handbags, rattan goods, baby clothes, lingerie…and this is only one of three shopping galleries in this area. Then once across Calle Portaferrissa, you find yourself in Portal del Angel, yet another well known shopping district.

What else to see

The extraordinary Plaza del Pi neighbourhood is a stone’s throw away from the Cathedral, the Opera house and the city’s largest fresh food market, La Boquería. Also close at hand is the emblematic Ramblas, lined with flower stalls, kiosks and cafes, populated at all hours with residents taking a stroll and visitors enjoying a good time. But when you need a break from sightseeing, you may choose one of the great variety of cafes and restaurants…or your own quiet apartment.

Casa Maria is situated on quiet calle Roca, just a few steps away from Plaza del Pi and the Ramblas, yet out of earshot from all the excitement. Whether your interest is tourism, shopping, business or simply enjoying Barcelona’s many pleasures at your own pace, you will find the Plaza del Pi area an ideal and privileged location for your accommodation.
