Torroella de Fluvià is a quiet agricultural village. On our street you will see neighbours
paying their daily visits, chatting while seated on chairs on the pavement or
front porch, or greeting other neighbours out for a stroll. Others are always busy, but don't fail to wave as they pass by while driving an amazing variety of agricultural vehicles. The bar-restaurant acts as the local 'business centre' and is the social centre of the village in the main square.
This 18th century village house was completely remodelled in 2003, conserving
and sandblasting the vaulted brick ceilings and stone walls on the ground floor.
The upper floor, where three of the four bedrooms are located, had been renovated
in the 1940's. The tiled floors and moderately high ceilings dating from this time
make the living space cool in summer and warm in winter. We conserved this
harmonious work and added modern kitchen and bathroom facilities. Each bedroom has quite unique features and is decorated in a different colour.
While the beaches of the Costa Brava are only 5km away, this house provides an opportunity to explore and experience the 'real' Spain away from the tourist traps, and to appreciate the rich natural and archeological treasures of the Costa Brava and the Ampurdán.
THE VILLA
Built in the 18th century, the house has had various owners during the past
century. A stone over the door bears the name of the Vilardell family, still
important in the village. Neighbours with long memories recall when the house
belonged to a family considered well off because of the ample size and
construction of the house. It was at that time a "taberna" known as Can Zula,
providing refreshment and lodging. Local children enjoyed visiting the lower
floor, with its impressive vaults and arches. On holidays, puppet shows were
held in the barn across the street, which was then attached to the property. A
deed of transfer of the property dated some 50 years ago is notarised by
Salvador Dalí, the father of the famous local painter, who lived in nearby
Figueres at that time.
Living room: Situated on the ground floor, 40 m2 with vaulted ceilings and tile
floor. It has seating for 10 people and connects to a narrow 8 m2 patio.
Dining room: Large 30 m2 kitchen-dining room seats 8 comfortably at table. The breakfast bar
in kitchen has two stools, and there is additional seating in this space.
Kitchen: Newly remodelled in 2003 with dishwasher, cooker, fridge, (the washing machine is in the downstairs bathroom). Granite
counter tops plus island bar with stools.
The upstairs is heated by a permanently installed radiator system.
Terrace: The 16 m2 south-facing roof terrace is a perfect place to enjoy the Mediterranean sunshine, dine al fresco, or get together for an evening drink and watch the sun go down.
Sun room: The adjacent sun room is also a lovely room to relax, read a book, listen to music, or even take that well-earned siesta. The large window looks out towards the Pyrenees and the south-facing wall is floor to ceiling glass looking out onto the terrace.
THE ACCOMMODATION (Sleeps 8 in 4 large double bedrooms)
Bedrooms: Four large double bedrooms of 13 to 15 m2, three with double beds and
one with two singles.
Bathroom 1: Upstairs bathroom features convenient walk-in shower.
Bathroom 2:Downstairs bathroom has two showers, convenient for getting kids and family sand-free after beach
visits. It features a vaulted ceiling, wash basin on iron stand with green granite top and decorative oxidised
iron door in stone and brick arched doorway.
AREA
Roads through the fields surrounding the village offer plenty of opportunities
for walking and cycling, as do some of the trails and paved roads. A number of
attractive towns and villages are nearby. A swimming pool is open to the public
in an adjacent village just 2km away. A walk along the river Fluvià takes
visitors to the nearby market town of Sant Pere Pescador, and the riverbank area
is included in the Aiguamolls nature preserve and bird sanctuary. More intensive
bird watching is afforded by the trails and blinds around the Aiguamolls visitor
reception centre located some 10 minutes away by car, between Sant Pere and
Castelló de Ampurias.
Beaches:
Several of the most attractive beaches on the Costa Brava are within easy reach.
the closest is Sant Pere, which extends for 10 km, and our favourite is Sant
Martí, which has five small coves, a Greek breakwater and a maritime walkway.
This affords a view of the Roman ruins of Ampurias and goes all the way to
L’Escala. Roller skating and cycling are permitted here, while walkers may use a
wheel-free pathway through the dunes.
Cuisine, wineries and nearby attractions:
Wineries in Pau, Vilajuïga and Perelada are within easy reach, and the Sant Pere
de Rodes monastery is a worthwhile attraction for many, as are the dolmens
nearby. Figueres with its Dalí museum is just 15 minutes away, while the
medieval centre of Girona requires a 25 minute drive, but is definitely worth
visiting. The French border is less that 30 minutes away by car.
Catalan and Ampurdan cuisine have never been more in vogue -- at least in recent
centuries. Local restaurants of every size and description offer ample
possibilities to try out the many local specialities. Fixed-price lunches of
three courses plus wine and dessert usually cost only 7 or 8 euro and will not
disappoint. There are plenty of opportunities to splurge on a good night out as
well as restaurants suitable for a meal with the kids.
Sporting and Wildlife activities:
Facilities for sport nearby include golf, water-skiing, diving, sea kayaking,
windsurfing, kite-surfing, sky diving, and horseback riding. Hikers and nature
lovers will enjoy the Cap de Creus Natural Park and the Gran Muntanya Protected
Area along the coast, as well as the Aiguamolls Natural Park, which includes
marshland, riverbanks, coastal areas and trails for hiking or cycling. Areas
around the Roman ruins of Ampurias and the beach at Sant Martí de Empúries are
under protection of the Forest Service.
La Garrotxa Natural Park features a volcanic park in a low mountain environment,
and the Pyrenees with their myriad mountain attractions are within easy reach,
at a distance of some 30 km. Another place of interest in the mountains is the
Albera Natural Protected Area.
Serious walkers will find plenty of scope for their activities including the
wonderful GR11 which starts at the coast and traces its route through Cap de
Creus, the Alberes, the Salines and the Pyrenees.
Villages:
Local villages are a great source of visitor interest. Few can resist the charm
of the village squares, the narrow streets of stone houses and the medieval
churches built in the Romanesque style.
Our village of Torroella de Fluvià is
included in an itinerary called the "Romanesque Route" because of its 11th
century parish church.
The other two poles of interest on this itinerary are
Sant Tomas (3 km away) and Sant Miquel de Fluvià (6 km).
Archaeology:
Apart from the well known ruins of Ampurias on the coast, the ruins of Iberian
and Roman settlement at Ullastret are also a fascinating place to visit. Both
sites have a visitor centre with a museum.
Routes and Itineraries:
We are very enthusiastic about local opportunities for cycling, walking, hiking,
sightseeing and pursuing cultural interest, and we have compiled a great deal of
helpful information about this to help our guests fully enjoy the possibilities
offered by our village, area and region. We are also glad to share this
information (both graphic and descriptive) with anyone having an interest in our
region or in activities such as cycling and hiking, or enjoying nature, local
culture or sports. But this is not the place to include such extensive and
detailed information, so please contact us if you wish to know more.
Maybe an aerial view of the area appeals to you!
Just for the kids:
The area immediately around Torroella is more agricultural than touristic, but
resort areas such as L'Escala and Ampuriabrava (15 -20 mins by car) will provide
plenty of entertainment for those interested in taking the kids to a resort for
the day to enjoy a water park, go kart track, mini golf, amusement arcades,
trampolines, bouncy castles, etc. Many of these facilities are not, however,
open in the off season.
Fiestas, festivals, fairs and markets:
While music festivals are mainly held in Spring and Summer, fairs and fiestas in
the villages are noteworthy attractions that occur throughout the year. Keep in
mind the weekly market days in the towns, when local produce is sold along with
other goods.
PRICE
The price range is from 500 to 900 euros per week (approximately £340 to £620 GBP).
